After the Convergence rotation, a red Vader deck seemed like the most viable option. In testing I had much more success with the FOST than I did with a Battle Droid and Retribution. I found the deck does pretty well against a lot of the current Standard meta decks, and had fun running this at the Denver GQ (4-2 Saturday).

Any suggested substitutes for folks (my son) with only 1 DVL and 1 VF?

Agent Of Zion 372

Megablaster Troopers are a not-terrible substitute for Fist, and Maul's Lightsaber is a perfectly acceptable standin.

Cheshire66 112

@JuzFuzzYou might try adding in two Vigilance in their stead. Vader can win games even without his saber or the Fist!

Awesome guys, thanks for sharing.

Any pointers on how to mulligan and then play the deck?

Scorpio Bandito - CloudCityCasuals 341

@Medic_gbg having played Vader a lot myself, I would assume you want to hard Mulligan for Vader’s Saber and Fresh Supplies, since you’ll usually win the roll off and dropping Vader Saber round 1 is potentially a dead character round 1 (or early round 2), 0-cost removal is nice in opener but since there’s 8 in the deck I think you can afford to mulligan them for VLS and fresh supplies. Fist is tempting to keep pre-mulligan but with no ways to reliably cheat it out (no truce/ delve/ NGtMD) it’s gonna be Dead for the first two rounds unless you luck roll into two 2resource sides

@Agent Of Zion You have no leader to spot for the Megablasters as Vader is only Sith... do you still think they're worth it? I don't.

Agent Of Zion 372

@MalaciousMawlocIn the absence of a second fist? Yeah. Fist has to fill the job of closing a game out almost immediately if Vader falls down. So anything taking its place has to do the same. That leaves redeploy weapons, and supports.

Redeploy weapons that are Vader-usable in Standard are terrible on FOST except for Heirloom and Megablaster puts out more damage across at least one additional die.

The only other realistic support options are the Hailfire Tank, Umbaran Tank, and Ground Battalion, all of which walk themselves into Forsaken. The only thing that can actually match Fist if Vader dies is Planetary Bombardment, but the additional resource cost pushes it out of viability.

I'm not saying Megablaster is as good as Fist, just that if I didn't have two Fists it's what I would use as a standin.

@Medic_gbg Personally, I hard mulligan for Fear and Dead Men, especially against three-wide decks. You also want Fresh Supplies and Vader's Saber. I would also for sure keep The Best Defense... in your opening hand, since you want to use it before your FOST dies.

As to playing the deck, I would advise not rushing to spend your resources on Fist or upgrades unless you still have some left over to pay for needed pay sides and mitigation. Naked Vader can win games by himself as long as you're able to mitigate and keep the damage coming.

Palp naked ..lol

I've been playing a Vader / Fist / Fighting Pit deck on TTS for a couple weeks and that battlefield sure does surprise folks. This build is much more refined - really great stuff.

How important is Intimidate, and why not Soresu Mastery or Treasured Lightsaber?

Miket1100 393

Cheshire66 112

@LukePM1776 I got pretty good use out of Intimidate (removing the shields given when I won the battlefield) but I would consider cutting it in favor of other cards, since the meta isn't very shield-heavy right now.

I don't think it's worth running Soresu Mastery or Treasured Lightsaber because the only upgrade Vader really needs is his saber. Spending resources on other upgrades like Soresu Mastery or Treasured Lightsaber would mean that you then don't have those much needed resources for pay sides etc. Plus, I found that those card slots are really needed for mitigation and aggro cards rather than upgrades.

@Miket1100 Tactical Mastery requires you to spot a Red character, and since the FOST is likely to go down very quickly, the card end up being dead for much of the game. On the other hand, this deck is very fast and will (and did) out-Claim almost every deck, allowing you to play Seize the Day even if your FOST is dead.

Hey Cheshire,

Been playing this deck for a bit. Had a version of it before I saw this list but yours was a bit more event heavy. Seems the way to go tbh. However, in testing, I have found that I almost NEVER like seeing Vader's Fist. It is just too heavy a cost at most times. If I have the money, I usually want it for mitigation or for dice costs. I was thinking about cutting the fists and either running 2x Treasured Lightsaber or 2x Measure for Measure. I know FOST goes down quick usually, at least in games with heavy amounts of indirect damage (looking at you Aphra) but the ability to remove ANY die at 0 cost is so good. Have you had similar thoughts about that or the Vader's Fist?

Gnoffer 1

aint tactical mastery straight up better than seize the day ?

Agent Of Zion 372

Not when you got a dead FOST

Gnoffer 1

arh i see... Fair point!

Brad21126 49

Yeah, the FOST is there for two Best Defense and any other indirect. No way you want to try to spot him late with that.

Cheshire66 112

@Darth_Azrael I did have similar thoughts about Fist (just too expensive most of the time). However, I'm torn about it because in my games where I did get the Fist down, it definitely won me the game. I feel like it's worth having in the deck, but I'd definitely be curious to hear how your testing goes without it! As far as subbing in Measure for Measure, I'd be wary of another mitigation card that relies on the FOST (since there's already 2x The Best Defense...) but it might be worthwhile for the 0 cost removal. I'd also consider putting in 2x Vigilance if you're taking out the Fists, as that can save you a lot of damage right there.

Darth_Azrael 1

@Cheshire66 I have gone with Treasured Lightsaber for now. Not bothered trying Measure fo MEasure. However, I am running Vigilance but I may cut it as I have a LOT of Aphra in my meta here in Virginia and it is pretty useless against them. I have not played a single game where I felt good playing Vigilance. My meta consists of Aphra decks, snoke/* decks and random support decks. The version of Vader I am running now can usually deal with them but I feel I need to tweak the deck a bit more for those match ups. Any thoughts?

Cheshire66 112

@Darth_Azrael Hmm, for teching against Aphra you could try running Bubble Shield? That can be good against Snoke as well.
