So this is my take on a Luke with bodyguards deck. I've seen Luke with Clone Troopers and Jedi Temple Guards, but I feel the hired guns work best for the access to yellow removal. The hope is to get a Heirloom Lightsaber onto Luke and go wild. Because with the character dice alone you have a 1/24 chance of rolling enough for Planned Explosion. Typically I have been able to pull off planned explosion Turn 2 or 3 with 1 upgrade in play plus either R2-D2 and Force Focus. But if Luke dies by turn 2, this deck has a major uphill battle.
Casual Competitive Report: (3-5)
Week 1
Game 1 - ePoe Dameron - More Than A Pilot/eHondo Ohnaka - Respected Businessman - Loss. This matchup wasn't even close. I couldn't kill either character, and with double cunning and a Poe blaster, I was wiped clean before doing significant damage.
Game 2 - ePoe Dameron - More Than A Pilot/eHondo Ohnaka - Respected Businessman - Win. Another Poe/Hondo deck. But with this one, I was able to hit Planned Explosion turn 2 and kill Hondo. After that, I was able to do enough damage and have enough health to outlast a Poe with 3 guns and 2 Planetary Uprisings thanks to a Hired Gun with a Heirloom and a Rey saber.
Game 3 - ePoe Dameron - More Than A Pilot/eHondo Ohnaka - Respected Businessman - Loss. It was Poe/Hondo night apparently. As I played 3 Poe/Hondo's in a row. This one was different than the last two. I hit Planned Explosion and was able to kill Poe, but I wasn't able to power through 2 second chances on Hondo and with double Cunning I wasn't able to survive 2 to 3 specials a turn.
Game 4 - eGeneral Grievous - Jedi Hunter/eMother Talzin - Nightsister Matriarch - Win. This was against a friend who really wants to make Grievous good. And it hit hard with Talzin changing Grievous' dice to high damage, but after an easy pickings and a planned explosion to Talzin, Grievous rolled cold and I was able to kill the general by round 5.
Week 2
Game 1 - eJango Fett - Lethal Mercenary/Kylo Ren - Tormented One - Loss. This was my first game against the local creation that two of our guys went 5-3 with at Minnesota Regionals, and I got steam rolled. I was only able to get 6 damage on the board the entire game, before I was defeated by round 4.
Game 2 - eJango Fett - Lethal Mercenary/Kylo Ren - Tormented One - Loss. This was against the other co-creator of "Thunder Thighs". This matchup was a lot closer than the last, as I was able to claim a couple times and used my battlefield to protect Luke for a few rounds. But it ended with 9 damage on Kylo and 6 damage on my last hired gun, and I rolled in no damage, and he rolled in lethal. It was a fun and intense matchup!
Game 3 - Saw Gerrera - Extremist Leader/Hera Syndulla - Phoenix Leader/Aayla Secura - Jedi General - Win. This was an interesting take on a vehicle deck. But I was able to pull off two planned explosions in this matchup and after that, 1 die Saw couldn't keep up with all 3 of my characters remaining.
Game 4 - eBala-Tik - Gang Leader/eCiena Ree - Adept Pilot/Nightsister - Loss. This was against the old 5-die villain deck. This player has been playing this same deck for a while now and he plays it well. After I Concentrate two of my dice to set up for a planned explosion play, and he dropped a Deflect and it was downhill from there. Bala killed both hired guns in the same round, and did 6 damage to Luke that round as well.
Overall, the deck was fun to play! It has been the most consistent Planned explosion deck I have played so far, but if you can't play the card, the deck struggles. The other major flaw with the deck is the pay sides on the hired guns. I found myself in situations where I could only pay for one or none of the hired gun damage sides, due to paying for mitigation.

Why not swap luke for han? He has 2 2 sides to lukes 1. Generates more resources. Allows you to consolidate damage sides for quicker resolutions. Quick draw and smuggler's run for fast activations / quick kills, epecially when you dont have planned explosion. Infamous for ambush to keep your opponents interaction at bay. Second chance to survive until you do. Plus, if your goal is planned explosion, why no vibro cutlas? Bow caster? Zeb's gun? Just some thoughts, good luck with the deck! |

This looks like a really fun deck - thanks for sharing I’ll have to give it a try. I like Planned Explosion I only wish it were a neutral instead of hero ;)
