This is my winning deck from the 07/15/2018 store championship at the Adventurer's Guild in Harrisburg, PA. There was a turnout of 10 players for the event.

Deck Tech:

Most of the upgrades are pretty straight forward here. Heirloom is probably your strongest upgrade for Pryce's ability as she is able to resolve it for 4 as long as you remain in control of the battlefield. Force speed is also of importance to keep you out ahead of the race for the battlefield, and also allows for some crazy plays (i.e. tactical mastery into activation of Kylo, resolve force speed for 2 more actions, activate Pryce, resolve loads of damage). Most of the events/mitigation are fairly straight forward as well. I shied away from "spot blue" mitigation, anticipating Kylo to be the target in every match. The Best Defense may be the strongest mitigation in the deck... more to follow on that.

Round 1 vs. Poe/Hondo: I was pretty surprised to run into a Hondo deck, and especially Poe/Hondo. I made sure to keep Logistics in my opening hand, which proved invaluable in helping to both ramp and keep Hondo in check early. I actually fell well behind in round 1 of this match. I hit Poe for 2 on the Kylo activation and rolled 3 damage. I later rolled in Pryce, showing another 2 damage. My opponent didn't mitigate anything to this point, so I thought I was in the clear. I paid off Hondo and then rerolled for max. Opponent drops In The Crosshairs and wipes my board. I was fortunate the next couple rounds as my opponent whiffed on a hit and run play and didn't draw into any useful upgrades. I quickly dispensed of Poe with some timely tactical mastery plays and, not drawing into second chance, Hondo dropped soon thereafter. 1-0

Round 2 vs Obi/Maz: This deck was being piloted by a talented local player and I would have rather not had to deal with it for another round, but here we sat. I ended up behind early again as Obi smacked my Kylo for 6 in round 1 with a My Ally is the Force play. We were also playing on Frozen Wastes, which made it difficult to execute many Pryce plays. I put a few damage on Obi round 1, but went off in round 2 hitting with Kylo's ability and rolling heat. I had Obi down to 2 health with a 2 showing on Pryce, which was hit with Frozen Wastes. I rerolled twice with Kylo, hitting the free 2 on the last reroll and effectively ending the match. The huge play for the round was hitting both Obi dice with The Best Defense. I used that card last SC season while playing FuNkar in the midst of the Palpatine meta.. turns out it still works really well against big characters. 2-0

Round 3 vs. Kylo/Pryce: This round was vs. another of my regular play test partners as the only 2-0 players after the pair down lost in round 2. My opponent this round was the one who indirectly pushed me to Kylo/Pryce after initially playing a lot of Kylo/Snoke. I believed he would be playing Pryce and knew this would be a poor matchup for my mono blue. I queried to him before the game that this mirror may come down to opening draw and battlefield initiative. I drew into an Ancient Lightsaber and 0 cost mitigation and won the battlefield roll. I dropped 9 damage on his Kylo round 1, and quickly dispensed of him early round 2. My opponent scooped shortly thereafter as I had 2 very healthy characters and he had no upgrades on Pryce. This was a very quick game where I rolled hot and he had a tactical mastery into triple blanks... 3-0

Round 4 vs. Snoke/Firmus Piett/Rebel Traitor: This was a deck I tested extensively myself with its access to all colors and a near 25/25/25/25 split amongst them for Kylo matchups. The big plays here are the early delve into a Speeder Tank, Planetary Bombardment, etc. My opponent did not disappoint and had a Speeder Tank and AT-ST out by early round 2. I won the battlefield roll to start the game, selecting my throne room. I was able to consistently abuse Pryce's special through this game, and after getting an early Heirloom with a logistics play round 1, I was hitting for 4 on demand. This game ended up being extremely close. I won with only 4 health remaining on Kylo and the exact 5 I needed to kill his final character, while he had no playable mitigation in hand. 4-0

I finished 4-0 with wins over the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place pilots. Looking back, I initially vastly underrated Pryce, believing she was just a bad version of a Yoda or Snoke, and I didn't audible to bring this deck until about midnight the night before the SC. While controlling the battlefield is paramount, Pryce has an extremely abusive ability while you do. I would expect this to be a deck that will remain near the top tables though the WOTF meta.

Thanks for reading!

Looks like a great deck, but I was just wondering if you had considered New Orders incase of your opponent winning the battlefield roll.

Krysis 388

@Cool Cat for President I did, but passed for a couple reasons. The local regulars all agreed ahead of time that we would be adhering to the most literal reading of battlefield interaction, meaning Pryce can't use her ability with throne room unless you already controlled the battlefield. That alone made it a dead card in faster matchups (e.g. the obi/maz game). And also I felt like force speed enabled enough aggressive plays that throne room was just the cherry on top at that point. I did audible to the deck late, tho, like I said so there is room for additional testing. Thanks for the question!

Agree with you on New Orders. Given Gandork also has said that the ruling should be the more literal one (i.e. if you don't have it already, you can't use it) and that seems to be the more accepted ruling, just doesn't make sense. Plus, while throne room is nice, certainly not necessary to win.

Krysis 388

@drbearsec for sure, the deck is capable of incredible damage early and often with or without throne room

Razelll 244

@JRB106My local store said the opposite of what your store said. They said because it makes more sense. What do you guys think the correct ruling should be. Just wondering.

The rule is this.... You do NOT take control of a battlefield simultaneously with the claim. So the order is... 1. You Claim... 2. You use the claim ability. 3. You take control of the battlefield. Until the claim ability is used, whomever last controlled it, still controls it.

In the case of Pryce, she must be CONTROLLING to use her +1 Resolve Ability. So if you didn't already control it on claim, your opponent would still control it.

So if Opponent controls field... Pryce player claims... Step 1. Pryce Player Claims. Step 2. Uses Claim ability on throne room, meaning player can turn and resolve a special. So Turns and resolves Pryce special.... Which means she can turn the die. HOWEVER, because the resolving of the claim ability isn't fully done, the control of the BF hasn't changed hands. Therefore Pryce can turn the die but not resolve it.

Head judge at Worlds is preaching this interpretation, just as an FYI. Since we have no official clarification from FFG, I defer to his wisdom.

Krysis 388

@Razelll basically what @drbearsec said. Some part of me feels that Pryce was designed to abuse throne room, but the literal wording and the commentary of the judge are the default in my opinion unless FFG rules otherwise

drbearsec 1

As soon as they clarify we will no for sure. If they say that Pryce can use it whenever she claims, then yeah.... its gonna get nuts.

I'm pretty Sure Poe/Maz was created to abuse Throne Room ;-)

swd_ande 1

It looks like she can use it when she claims, according to FFG.

Looks like they are changing the rules then. Fair enough... So Yeah @JRB106 looks like you are correct... they did make Pryce to abuse it.

drbearsec 1

thank you @swd_ande Good to see the clarification ahead of waiting for the RRG to pop up

Razelll 244

@swd_ande Ya, thank you for letting us know.

Good news for this deck!

Quote: The "Claim the Battlefield" entry on page 14 in the Rules Reference should read: When a player claims the battlefield, if they do not control it, they take control of it and move the battlefield card to their in-play area. Then that player may use its “Claim” ability

NotANinja 1

Oh sorry! I didn't realize new comments were at bottom instead of top!

New rule changes certainly help the deck, but I still like Kylo Snoke better. Yes, a little more blue, but this deck is generally predominantly blue anyway...
